Composition & Visual Flow for Tattoo Artists

A practical seminar exploring one of the fundamental challenges of tattoo design:

How do you create an image that belongs on a moving, three-dimensional body?

A successful tattoo is not simply a beautiful drawing transferred onto skin. Placement, scale, direction, anatomy, negative space and movement all affect how the finished piece is perceived.

Drawing on principles from painting, composition and tattoo design, this workshop explores:

• Designing for three-dimensional form

• Working with the natural lines of the body

• Placement and scale

• Direction and visual movement

• Composition and focal points

• Positive and negative space

• Adapting drawings to different areas of the body

• Creating relationships between multiple tattoos

• Common compositional mistakes

• Developing a stronger visual eye​

 

Suitable for tattoo artists, apprentices and artists interested in designing for tattooing.

Participants are welcome to bring designs for discussion.
